THUNDERSTORMS - FRIDAY NIGHT JAZZ - DURHAM, NC

Yeah, I did get a little bit wet, but I had the pleasure of hearing the performance at THE SHED - Annalise Stalls + the Zen Poets.   They performed mostly original works that made for a couple of hours of enjoyable listening.  Hooray for THE SHED.  Keep it coming.

After this inspiration I made the journey up the street a ways to THE CUBAN REVOLUTION and allowed myself to enjoy The Ernest Turner Quartet -  Ernest Turner on keys, Michael Ode on drums, Jason Foureman on bass, and Stephen Riley on Tenor sax.  A treat followed by some late evening jazz conversations with musicians and jazz lovers.

The WNCU live broadcast from THE CUBAN REVOLUTION happened earlier.  A thank you to the staff at WNCU for keeping that happening for us each last Friday of the month.

A good Friday night for JAZZ in Durham , NC.

The EF2 PARTY is scheduled for Sept. 20th.  EMAIL invites coming shortly.

FRIDAY NIGHT JAZZ IN DURHAM, NC - TODAY, SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 IN DURHAM, NC

On Friday, June 19, 2015 Jazz in Durham, NC was alive and well.  The BEYU was swinging with Kevin Van Zant.  Kevin was on guitar, Steve Riley on tenor sax, Mark Wells on organ, Tyler Leak on drums.  They started the 8pm set by honoring my request for "I'll Remember April".  That was great, and things just got better as the set moved on.  Thank you gentlemen.

Over at Alley 26 a full buzzing house was being treated to Andrew Berinson on piano and Shaquim Muldrow on tenor saxophone.  These two play together often and they sound good working with each other.  It was good to be able to give you guys a listen.  "Where you at next?"

I know there were sounds going on at Sharp 9 and Cuban Revolution.  I couldn't get to all of them, but it is great just to know they were available.  A healthy jazz scene in Durham, NC.  WELL ALRIGHT!!   EF2 is approaching.

Prayers and condolences to the people in Charleston, SC.

HAPPENINGS

BEYU Caffe  -  Baron Tymas Trio tonight - Kevin Van Zant Friday night.  Both sessions are free and should be very enjoyable.  Check the venue schedules online.  Looks like some good listening  just keeps on coming here in Durham, NC.   Keep an eye out for EF2.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT JAM

The BEYU jam session last night was "another good un".   I enjoyed those who sat in  - some of the folks were: Vocals -  Noah Powell, Sharon Barton, Jessie      Piano -Andrew Berinson,  Joe,  Ernest Turner      Guitar -  James Gilmore,  Zack      Alto - John Powers    Drums - Felix Allen,  Mike Ode.  There were other contributors, but I didn't get their names.  Of course, the Swing Master, Kobie and his regulars, Kenny and Russell were very tasteful as always.  If you're a musician you ought to drop in and participate in this jam on a Wednesday night.  If you're a jazz supporter this is a great way to expand your jazz enjoyment right here in Durham,  NC.  Ernest Turner runs a jam every Monday night at the Shed and he's playing this Friday night at Sharp 9 Gallery.  Andrew Berinson will be at Alley 26 on Friday.    The jam sessions are great!  I recommend them highly for both participants and those of us who just love to hear jazz music and hang with good friendly jazz folks.

BEYU BRIAN MILLER TRIO THE STATE OF JAZZ IN DURHAM NC

Last night, Saturday, June 13, 2015 was another shining example of things that I really appreciate regarding what I've found happening with the Durham jazz scene. (See my post of Wednesday, May 20, 2015). The scheduled performer for the evening at BEYU Caffe couldn't make it at the last moment.  BEYU  boss man Dorian put in a call and sax player of note, Brian Miller played the gig with a trio  - Ernest Turner making the organ talk, and Tyler Leak ensuring that everybody in the house knew they came to play.  And play they did.  The Brian Miller Trio had the whole place in a celebratory mood right away.  The audience readily joined in on birthday celebrations, a wedding anniversary, and a thank you for many years of military service.  The band had feet tapping, heads nodding, hands clapping and just good feelings going on right from the moment they started playing.  BEYU Caffe management topped things off by providing immediately redeemable gift certificates to its patrons for any inconvenience they may have endured. THE JOINT WAS JUMPIN'!  Another good night for jazz in Durham, NC.  As usual, I had a ball.  Thank you to everybody who made this happen -  including all the jazz lovers in  the audience.  Ed Furtick

AASIM ERNEST KOBIE

What a great thing to have WNCU here in Durham.  I was listening to the Morning Jazz show with Aasim today.  He played a cut that had some fantastic keyboard stuff going on.  I missed who it was, but called and Aasim told me the cut was Brand New Day from an album of the same name by Brian Horton.  This was a new discovery for me.  Aasim let me know that Brian Horton was the leader and reed man.  Shortly after our phonecon he played another cut from the album and announced that the piano player was Ernest Turner and that Kobie Watkins was on drums.  The bass player is Ameen Saleem.  I'm not familiar with Brian or Ameen, but Ernest and Kobie are two of my "usual suspects". I go to hear them lay down some great sounds every chance I get.  Thanks to WNCU and it's great staff I've now got more new jazz to enjoy via Ernest, Kobie, Ameen, and Brian.  To quote Aasim "A Good Friday To You".  It certainly has started out as a good one for me.  Thank you folks!

ORNETTE COLEMAN

Condolences to Ornette Coleman's family & loved ones on his passing yesterday at 85 years old.

WHAT'S GOING ON????

I suggest going on the internet for upcoming schedules for BEYU Caffe, SHARP 9 Gallery, THE SHED,  and individual musician's websites.  The answer to the question about what's going on in live jazz in Durham, NC and environs is A WHOLE LOT!  And the gigs are happening now.  If you're a jazz lover, I'd be willing to bet a buck or two that you can find someplace, or several places to catch some good live jazz almost any night of the week.  I stopped in on the Cool 21 Jazz Trio  at Alley 26 last night. Baxter Smith on piano, Ed Moon on bass, Donovan Cheatham on drums  It was enjoyable.  This was Tuesday night in Durham, NC.  RIGHT ON!  I hope we jazz lovers can show support for the musicians and venues that are offering us the chance for some of the best medicine in the world - MUSIC  in general, JAZZ in particular.  Hope to see a bunch more of you out and about enjoying and supporting.  Kobie's jam is at BEYU tonight.  The BU PROJECT is at THE SHED Thursday night 8pm start,  and another one of our smokin' usual subjects jazz groups, The Michael Jones Trio, Michael Jones on keys, Bill Hayes on drums, Ellis Merlin on bass, is at BEYU  Thursday 7-9pm.  I'm having a good time just talking about what's going on!

Worthy of mention as usual is our great radio station, WNCU/90.7FM, streaming 24hours a day at wncu.org.  They just keep bringing it on.  Thank you folks. " Keep  the cards and letters coming."

Keep reading this blog for info on the " EF2 Party".
