THURSDAY 1/28/2016 A MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR JAZZ

Thursday was a good night for live jazz in Durham, NC.

Aaron Hill and his trio were at the BEYU Caffe for their usual 3rd Thursday of the month offering.  Not only was the listening enjoyable, but in addition Aaron Hill shared some of his knowledge of special jazz recordings he recommends for our listening pleasure.  Included in his comments were a couple of composers most of us have heard about --  Duke & Billy.   Thanks to the members of the trio -- Aaron Tucker, drums (Happy Birthday Aaron),  Jason Foureman, bass and Aaron Hill, sax.  Check out the Aaron Hill Quartet at Sharp 9, this Friday 2/5/2016, 8pm.  Also,  thanks to BEYU Caffe for continuing to give us GREAT JAZZ EVERY THURSDAY FOR FREE.

THE SHED was home on Thursday for the initial outing of the Shaquim Muldrow Quartet, Shaquim on sax, Andrew Berinson piano,  Aaron Gross bass, Atticus Reynolds drums, with Dupresha Townsend stepping in on some vocals.  A one word summary, NICE!  Thanks folks, and thanks to THE SHED for continuing to  provide another spot where we can LISTEN TO JAZZ.

Musicians and venue operators, please "KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON."

Jazz Lovers there's lots of  "good times being had by all".   Feel free to jump in at any time.

RESERVOIR

The Durham, NC and environs jazz reservoir is swinging.

Tuesday night was the monthly visit of the NCJRO (North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra) to Sharp 9.  As usual they were in fine form.  As an added attraction they played Gary Brunotte's recent composition,  "Sincerely Yours".  Gary was in attendance and gave Jim Ketch a brief assist in conducting the band on his tune. It was great!  Another good evening for those of us who enjoy big band jazz.  Thanks folks.

Wednesday night's jam session at the Mary Lou on Duke's campus was well attended by players and listeners.  John Brown's weekly event works well and this week found Brian Miller in rare form (is he ever anything else?) as he kept the atmosphere swinging.  Lots of musicians contributed to making good sounds ---  Piano, Quincy Jones;  Bass, Jason Foureman, Ginnae Koon; Drums, Donovan Cheatham, Curtis McPhatter, Felix Allen; Guitar, James Gilmore, Ashesh Ananda Chatterjee; Sax, Shaquim Muldrow;  and others. If  you participated in this jam session please send me an email letting me know you were there.  If you know anyone else that played, please tell them to let me know.
