NINA, MICKEY, & MISSISSIPPI GODDAM
It's great to be in a jazz reservoir where the folks who send tunes to you over the airwaves help you understand why you love this music so much. Thank you Aasim and Larry for helping me take note that yesterday, February 21, was the anniversary of the birth of "THE HIGH PRIESTESS OF SOUL", Nina Simone.
I've been a fan of Nina's for a long time. My post from earlier today, Nina's "Mississippi Goddam", has special significance as it came out in early 1964. Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney were killed in Mississippi in June of 1964 although their bodies were not discovered until August of that year. Mickey Schwerner was a friend of mine. Fifty-five years ago, this June we graduated from Cornell University where we pursued our studies, waited tables together at fraternity houses and a restaurant, and sipped refreshments together while we listened to some "sounds". We were Ray Charles fans. Mickey really enjoyed "Baby What'd I Say".
Mickey and his coworkers were awarded the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF HONOR posthumously by President Obama in 2014.
I have a playlist entitled "Schwerner". The first tune is Nina's "Mississippi Goddam". The remainder of the songs are from brother Ray. It's a long playlist. During the past few years I've played the "Schwerner" playlist quite frequently during the June - August timeframe. It brings back memories of some of my many good times. I wish Mickey was here so we could catch Nina, brother Ray, Diz, the MJQ, etc. together. (With refreshments). Thanks for the landmark song Nina.

VALENTINE'S DAY CONCERT
WOW! My statement is THANK YOU to everybody who had anything to do with the concert on Sunday afternoon 2/14/16. This was one of those sessions where everything was Cookin'. "THE JOINT WAS JUMPIN' " and any miscues didn't even matter. The jazz studies programs at our Triangle universities are to be given a big fat "RIGHT ON"! TO THE POWERS THAT BE WHO CAN KEEP THIS EVENT (AND MORE LIKE IT) A HAPPENING --- PLEASE DO! My special thanks to JOHN BROWN, JIM KETCH, AND IRA WIGGINS. You gentlemen and your staffs continue to be my heroes. OF COURSE, ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE PROOF OF THE PUDDING JUST NEEDS TO CATCH YOUR STUDENTS/GRADUATES IN PERFORMANCE. I hope the Valentine's Day concert was recorded. Please let us know when that product is available. An OH YEAH goes out to the jazz lovers of Durham, NC and environs - you folks were also rockin' and did a great job of showing your appreciation to the performers. So, to all concerned, "KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON". Edward (Ed) Furtick, Jr. and Ellen Friedland -- EF2

Jason Marshall is a highly sought after and established fixture on the global music landscape. A rare
specimen even among the highly competitive New York City music scene, the Washington D.C. born
saxophonist can be seen playing soul music with Aretha Franklin, Latin jazz with Arturo O'Farrill, pop with
Desi Di Lauro, avant garde jazz with the Charlie Mingus Big Band and rock music with the Young
Presidents, sometimes all in the same week. In addition, the graduate of the New School and Aaron
Copeland School of music can also be found performing weekly with the iconic NYC hip hip band, Nickle
& Dime Ops and with his own, The Jason Marshall Organ Trio in Harlem. In New York since 2003,
Jason first gained attention as a side in several ensembles led by trumpet star Roy Hargrove. He has
performed on Broadway in the theater production of Fela! and Off-Broadway in the productions of The
Best is Yet to Come and Big Maybelle. In addition to playing saxophone in Big Maybelle, Mr. Marshall
also provided the voiceover for the entire play. Mr. Marshall has also been featured on bass clarinet with
the Mingus Orchestra and Chuchito Valdez. The Duke Jazz Ensemble is directed by John Brown.
