THIS SUNDAY AUGUST 23, 2015 B N DUKE AUDITORIUM " DRUMMER SOME"

The music last year at "GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME" was great.  This year the performances start at 6pm.  Thomas Taylor says his band will be smokin'.  Included in his band are Dr. Ira Wiggins, Robert Trowers and Ed Paolantonio.  Just to catch those folks playing together would be worth the price of admission.  ADMISSION IS FREE!  Music workshops start at 2pm.  There's one on playing the vibes.  A silent auction happens at 5pm.  Money from the auction goes to a scholarship fund in Jazz Study.  I had a good time at this program last year.  The only thing that disappointed me was the limited number of folks who were in the audience.  As part of the great Durham & Environs Jazz Community you owe it to yourself to be a part of this happening event.  For further info contact Thomas Taylor 919-530-6319.

TONIGHT IN CHAPEL HILL

The Heart Of Carolina Jazz Orchestra outdoor stage on the Southern Village Green. (600 Market Street).  Bring your lawn chairs.  Free!  Directed by Gregg Gelb.  7 - 9pm

GOOD STUFF

Monday night jazz at THE SHED was good stuff one more time again.  Ernest Turner put out his great blend of things you know and things you're hearing only because of him.  Kenny Phelps Mckeown -  bass and Donovan Cheatham - drums kept things swinging.  Good folks joined in during the jam session  ----  Ginnae Koon - bass,  Nathan Bullington - tenor sax, Brad Leali - alto sax, was passing thru town.  He's from Dallas and left us with the memory of some mellow sounds from his horn.  Also participating  - Joe McPhail - piano,  Mike Ode was back in town and made the drums talk.  Danny Grewen let us know that the trombone still has a lot to say.  Thanks to  Dan Stark and Brian Miller for giving us the ear pleasing sound of double alto sax.  I know there were more participants who I didn't get to identify.  If you were there and played, please let me know at future jam sessions so I can give you a mention.  Thanks to all of you for giving me and mine a good night of good live jazz.

In keeping with the smoking jam session tradition that the BEYU Caffe has developed, Kobi Watkins is on the schedule to make things happen tonight.  This session just keeps gettin' it on.  A great place to hear more live jazz in Durham, NC.  If you need a refresher of what can happen tonight, see my post re: last Wednesday night.  Wow!  Start time 7pm.
