NANCY WILSON/CANNONBALL EVENT - OUTSTANDING

Thanks to all involved with this great show on Friday 9/26/2019 at Sharp Nine in Durham, NC.  It brought back good vibes of the time I was fortunate enough to see Nancy and Cannon in live performance in a club in Philly - 1960s timeframe.  I consider us jazz/music fans to be absolutely blessed with the abundance of great talent we get to experience.  Please Y'ALL,  "KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON!"

Andrew and the quartet help me celebrate by doing what is always a smokin' good time session.! Hopefully we can all share some birthday cake.

Sat. 6/22/19 BLAKEY/KOBIE/ SHARP 9/AUDIENCE

THE JOINT WAS JUMPIN'!!!   Gratitude, respect, admiration are just some of the words included in the definition of TRIBUTE .  This past Saturday night June 22, 2019 at Sharp Nine Gallery in Durham, NC a happening took place which deserves all of the positive words - big and small - that the dictionary provides.  Kobie Watson's leadership and playing -  He pulled together the absolute right musicians to perform Art Blakey's stuff.  The musicians - to a person - made the audience feel like we were participants in a great big joyous party and that we all should be having a ball, because they surely were!!! Thank you musicians - Kobie Watkins drums/leader, Brian Horton tenor sax,
Christian Tambour piano, Wes Parker trombone, Ryan Nielsen trumpet, Jason Fourman bass.  The Sharp Nine facility provided the wonderful acoustics and the staff attentiveness to details.  They kept things rolling even with the overflow audience. And the audience!  This was one of the hippest audiences I've had the pleasure of being part of in while.  We knew when and how to applaud.  We also knew when and how to talk and to keep quiet.  As I said, THE JOINT AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS EVENT WAS JUMPING!!!  Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.  I hope the  next one of these great happenings is already scheduled.

Edward Furtick, Sr.

I often make the comment that I feel blessed to be located here in such a great place for jazz/other music/ and the arts in general. Many of my memories are associated with music. I am focused today on memories of my dad, Edward Furtick, Sr. Today April 28, 2019 would have been his 114th birthday. He passed away at age 99. I had the pleasure of hearing the NCCU Jazz Big Band in concert last night. I am still full of good memories of dad taking me to hear Count Basie for the first time at the APOLLO. I also feel good when I hear or think about the spiritual, "If I Can Help Somebody". My father would sing/hum this song every time we were together. Good thoughts of a good man - HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

HUGH MASEKELA

As a result of my friendship with a fine music person, Mr. John Cartwright, who was the best man in my wedding ceremony way back when, I had the privilege of being in the company of Hugh Masekela more than once.  I always found him gracious and REAL  Aside from making some great music for us, Hugh was heavily involved in worldwide human rights. If you check some of Masekela's recordings, you'll find John Cartwright as the bass player -- sometimes as the producer.  Today, April 4, 2019 would have been Hugh's 80th birthday.  I'm glad he was here with us for a while.

TRIANGLE YOUTH JAZZ ENSEMBLE ONE MORE ONCE

TYJE!!!  THEY ARE DOING IT AGAIN!!!!  "KEEPIN' ON"!!!!

DOING IT AGAIN ---- TYJE ----- ELLINGTON NEW YORK

FROM GREGG GELB

TYJE has made me, and our region, very proud by being selected as a finalist for the National Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Festival this year, and for the last three years.

TYJE is among the top high school student big bands in the country and the students desire to continue attending this prestigious competition each year. The Essentially Ellington Festival is a prime motivator for attracting the most talented youth in the region, while advancing the quality of music education we provide and growing our organization. In 2016, TYJE earned 2nd place and many of the highest individual awards in 2017 and 2018.  The students sound as good as many professional bands. We rehearse once a week on Sunday’s. Participants are selected by audition at the beginning of every year and come from all over the Greater Raleigh region.

Have a quick look at us in this Youtube video. https://youtu.be/LzwocJtYbHw

Our sponsoring organization, The Philharmonic Association, has done incredible work over the 30 years of its existence, growing to sponsor five classical orchestras and three jazz ensembles. It was awarded the 2012 Raleigh Medal of Arts Award for its extraordinary contributions to youth and the arts. It is run on a professional level, with paid instructors for each ensemble.

Student’s fees, grants from United Arts Council and City of Raleigh, and donors fund its operating budget. But for its annual trip to Jazz at Lincoln Center in May of each year, TYJE needs to raise funds separately from Philharmonic Association fundraising.  The estimated cost to take 25 young people and 4 chaperones to NYC for the festival, which is 4 days long, is $25,000.  While we raise some of it through performance fees and Jazz at Lincoln Center provides a small travel stipend, we must rely on donors for the majority.

Therefore, I am writing to you to ask you to help us support the travel costs of this highly respected event. There are three ways to contribute: One, is to purchase tickets to attend our Garden Party/concert/fundraiser on April 27th at 4pm. (please see the announcement below). You can click this link for information https://www.eventbrite.com/e/new-york-new-york-jazz-in-the-garden-concert-tickets-57429039804. Two, checks can be written to the Philharmonic Association with Triangle Youth Jazz in the memo and sent to the address below, or third, you can go to www.philharmonic-association where you will find a contribution button. Your support will mean so much to me and to my students!

Sincerely,

Gregg Gelb, Director of Philharmonic Association Jazz Program
Conductor, Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble

MY FAVORITE PERSONAL COMPOSER JAN. 19 SHARP NINE

As I mentioned in a previous posting, James Gilmore is my favorite personal composer.  Of course, he is also the only person who has composed a song based on my  storytelling - Ed's Big Night.  James will be laying down some nice sounds in a trio format at Sharp Nine in Durham next Saturday night, January 19, 2019.  Come out and enjoy an evening of good jazz sounds.
