JIMMY GILMORE QUARTET SHARP NINE JUNE 1, 2018

Not only does James Gilmore play good guitar, he also has some nice players scheduled with him - Annalise on sax,  Butler on drums, and Kassem on drums.  Should be a good session.  Mr. Gilmore is also my favorite composer of all time.

A MONDAY 5/14/18 BLUES HAPPENING

Invitation to Blues Women: A multi-media edutainment performance

Hello Friends!
We're documenting a wonderful piece I thought you might be interested in seeing. If your Monday morning is free on 5/14, please join us for about an hour of great music and stories about important women musicians who contributed to American culture. If you're a music lover, this program offers a delightful mix of story and music, juxtaposed with film and narration, singing and live band. If you're a music teacher or teaching artist, this program can provide an example of how to use your art to engage audiences and inspire your work in arts education.
We could certainly use an appreciative audience for our filming session. Please join us and bring a friend! Share this email!

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Blues Women – is a multi-discipline educational program combining music, film, movement and song, while exploring six dynamic blues women that shaped American music. Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Dinah Washington, Alberta Hunter, Billie Holiday and Mamie Smith will come alive as Lenora and trio perform their songs and tell their stories in this interactive, audience participatory experience. The film installation, created by filmmaker Lana Garland, consists of archival and present day footage which interweaves with the live performance, tracing the contributions of these great women in contemporary music from then to now. Using the genres of Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Pop, and Hip-Hop, this presentation is suitable for grades 6 through 12 and adults. Created by Lenora Helm Hammonds and Lana Garland.

WHAT'S GOING ON

https://locavorejazz.weebly.com/  Checking the multiple information items mentioned on Peter Burke's website can provide lots of things to investigate as far as jazz in the area.  I also recommend looking at facebook from time to time to see what particular people/organizations/groups have got going on.  Deidra and Kenny, I hope this helps (our discussion at Sharp Nine the other evening).  If you send your email address to me, edfurtick@gmail.com, I'll be glad to include you on any separate/specific notes that I generate.  As I mentioned,  this is the Durham & environs Jazz Reservoir!  Lots of good stuff going on for us jazz lovers.  ENJOY!
