Birthdays today - two greats,  John Coltrane & Ray Charles.

We lost Joe Sample on September 12, 2014 http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/09/13/348213148/a-talent-that-bridged-genres-jazz-pianist-joe-sample-dies.  He made some great contributions.  Listen to anything by the Crusaders and you'll remember/discover how great he was. Condolences to his family.

It's fifty years since Coltrane's release of "A Love Supreme".  There was an excellent session on this work last night in Durham, NC.  It was led by the author of "A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album", Ashley Kahn and Branford Marsalis.  Marsalis recorded a version of "A Love Supreme" in 2004.  The recording and book might be something to check out.
